University of Madras (UOM), popularly known as Madras University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is amongst the three oldest universities in India. Madras University was established following a public petition dated 11th November, 1839. However, later in January 1840, the University Board was constituted with Mr. George Norton as its President. It offers a variety of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University campus as well as affiliated institutions spread over the districts of Chennai, Thrivallur and Kanchipuram.
