Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India Examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technologies on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and Government of India. Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarships/ assistantships in engineering colleges/institutes is open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture or Master’s degree in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications are eligible for admission to Master/ Doctoral programmes in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other government scholarships/ assistantships. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. However, candidates with Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture may seek admission to relevant PhD programmes with scholarship/ assistantship without appearing in the GATE examination. The exam mainly aims at motivating candidates for admissions to post graduate programmes in Engineering, technology, Architecture andPharmacy at the national level. It encourages the students so as they can be a better future for the country. Some colleges stipulate GATE as an obligatory qualification for post graduate programmes like: M. Tech, M.E. etc. A candidate who has been qualified GATE exam may also be eligible for the award of junior research fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

Qualification Required
The candidates who want to appear for GATE exam may have following educational background.
  • Candidates those who have Master’s Degree in any branch of Statistic/ Technology/Engineering/Mathematics or equivalent and also those who are in the final or pre-final year of such educational programmes.
  • Candidates with Bachelor Degree in Architecture/Pharmacy/Engineering, 4 years after 10+2, and also those who are in the final or pre-final year of such educational programmes.
  • Candidates those who are in the second or higher year of the Four-year integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Technology/Engineering or in the third or higher year of five-year integrated Master degree programme and Duel degree programme in Technology/Engineering.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Candidates those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

  • Application Procedure
    There are two different processes by which a candidate can apply/ register for GATE, namely, "online" and "offline". The online process requires the candidate to fill a Web based application on the Internet. Online submission of application and online fee payment can be made by accessing the GATE websites of IITs. Information Brochure and Application Form can be obtained on cash payment of a requisite amount from the designated Bank Branches corresponding to each zone. Candidates can also obtain Information Brochure and Application Form by Post from the zonal GATE offices by sending a request letter and two self-addressed slips along with a Demand Draft for the requisite amount payable at the city of the respective zonal GATE office. Application Form can also be obtained from the zonal GATE Offices after handing over Demand Draft for the appropriate amount. Completed application forms, along with the original pay- in- slip (issued by the bank/ GATE Office) and other enclosures as applicable, should be submitted to the Chairman GATE of the zone where the candidate intends to register for the examination.

    Last date for Submission of Online Application form (website closure):- Monday 17 October 2011(23:00 Hrs)
    Last date for the receipt of printed version of ONLINE Application form at the respective zonal GATE Office:- Monday 24 October 2011
    Zonal GATE website display of final list of registered candidates, choices of test paper and examination city:- Friday 09 December 2011
    Availability of admit card on zonal GATE websites :- Monday 02 January 2012
