    The Distance Education programme of D.E.I. was launched in 2004 to extend the benefits of the value-based educational system to the weaker sections and women particularly in remote, backward and tribal areas in various parts of the country for their empowerment and economic development. This is in accordance with D.E.I.'s education policy as well as a manifestation of Vision 2011. The initiation of the Distance Education Programme in 2004 was marked by the launch of a Certificate Programme on Motor Vehicle Mechanic at Melathiruvenkatanathapuram (MTV Puram), a remote village in Tamil Nadu with rampant unemployment and economic backwardness. The Distance Education Council (IGNOU) had given approval for the Distance Education Programme of DEI and recognition accorded to the Institute by the DEC on the recommendation of the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC for a period of three academic years with effect from academic year 2009-10.
